  • Getting old...

...is no fun! And there is no such thing as getting old gracefully. I will be 26 in 23 days and so not looking forward to it.

I have been reading about David in 2 Samuel. I prayed that the Lord would teach me or show me
something through his life and then the thing I noticed was that David killed all of his enemies. I thought that was kinda funny. But since reading through Samuel 1 and 2 David has become one of my favorite characters in the O.T. David was a pretty rough guy. I mean Rambo has got nothing on this guy. He killed thousands of Philistines so he could marry a girl, fought in several battles without fear, pretty much took what he wanted when he wanted it, and was revered by all of Israel. But even so, he also had so much reverence for the Lord and love and forgiveness for Gods people. The forgiveness that he had for Saul really challenged me but what challenged me even more was his response to the guy who killed Saul. David revered the Lord so much that he refused to harm Saul because he was Gods '' anointed''. Even though Saul tried to kill him David would never fight back. When someone finally did kill Saul David became angry and put that guy to death. That’s the kind of love and respect that we lack and need more of. I know I do. I’m not finished reading 2 Samuel yet but im sure I’ll have more thoughts as I go.
Well now I’m off to bed so have a good night. P.S I wrote this entire blog on the WII and it took so long. FYI.

  • A sappy work story

It’s been a while since I wrote anything and I figured that I should do that soon so I am going to write about something awesome that happened tonight.  In case anyone who is reading this didn’t know, I work for the Youth Opportunity Center which is basically a rehabilitation center for troubled pre-teens and teens.  Anyway, back to the story.  There is one particular kid that I work with who can really get under my skin. We'll call him Rocky for confidential reasons.  I think he is about 10 and really makes me want to punt him across the room.  Seriously, in the last eight months of working there he is the only one who has made me so angry that I had to leave to room for about a half hour.

Today, at the beginning of the shift, he asked if his mother was going to come visit him.  Sundays are visitation days but I was not sure so I told him that if he was called to visits then he would be able to go.  Well the time came and passed and he was not called so he became very upset.  He began to ball up his fist, breath hard, and cuss at staff and his mother.  I talked to him for a few and then called his mom to find out if she was going to be able to make it.  She told me that she couldn’t because she injured her leg somehow. Brief tangent. This lady apparently "injured her leg" and was not able to visit her ten year old son whom is in a locked down facility.  She only has the chance to visit her son for 3 hours a week outside of counseling sessions but couldn’t come today because she hurt her leg.  She did not even call to let Rocky know that she was not going to be able to make it. She just stood him up.  That really made me angry. For the most part, if the kids I work with had decent parents they would not even be in the situations they are in right now.  Another reason to call your parents and tell them how blessed you are to have parents that cared about you.  Back to the story.  After I told him that his mother was not going to make it, he immediately went into his room and started crying.  After a few he came out to watch a movie with the rest of the kids.  While watching the movie he got upset at another resident because the resident started antagonizing him.  He actually started to punch the resident but didn’t follow through.  I gave both of them a consequence and told them to spend time in their rooms.  The other resident went but I had to fight and argue with Rocky to get him to go to his room.  He eventually went.  Later, during rec time, he got upset again because we didn’t play the game that he wanted to play.  He whined and pouted for a while and told me he was going to get me fired and how horrible of a staff I was.  Again, I talked to him and he calmed down and eventually participated with the rest of the residents.  By the end of the night I was getting to the point where I was getting a little frustrated.  Well, when it was time for the kids to go to bed Rocky gave another staff a side hug and told her that she was the best staff that he had.  Then he came up to me, gave me a dirty look with a smile, and gave me a side hug.  This was after he had been angry all day and told me that he didn’t like me and everything else. It really gave me one of the best feelings that I have had since I started working at the Y.O.C.  I realized that even though the kids don’t show it much, I really do have an impact on them.  Then I started to think about this; I was there today when his mother wasn’t.  Sometimes I get to the point where I really don’t want to work at this job.  It is stressful, I am under-paid, and I have to put up with alot of things that I really shouldn’t have to.  But times like these make the job worth it and make me want to go back the next day.  God has blessed me with this opportunity and I hope that the kids see Him through me.

  • Tonight Tonight

Alright, well, its Friday night, I just got off work, and have nothing to do so I am going to post another meaningless blog.  But I do have a good story to tell so at least it will be a little entertaining.  The other night a buddy that I had not talked to in about a year texted me at like midnight and asked if I wanted to go to a coffee shop at ball state.  I replied, “Yeah, coffee sounds great in the middle of the night." and met up with him at the MT Cup.  Well, right across the street from this place is a bar and the doors were wide open.  We were sitting on the porch of the coffee shop so we had a great view of the inside of the bar.  Well, as my friend and I were talking we notice this scrimmage going on inside the bar.  At first we thought that it was just a bunch of guys goofing off then notice that the bouncers were jumping in.  At this point our focus was totally on what was going on across the street from us.  The bouncers broke up the fight and split the two up, but as they were pulling the guy on top off he got this sneaky last kick in that landed right on the other guys face.  It was so loud that we heard it across the street.  I felt bad for the guy at first but then thought, wait a minute, this guy is probably drunk and might deserve it.  At this point the bouncers threw both the guys out and my friend and I just kinda looked at each other in disbelief of their stupidity.  After a few minutes of sitting there talking, after the fight, this other guy came over to our table and just started a random conversation. He had his septum (the thing in your nose that separates your nostrils) pierced and looked kinda scraggy but was friendly.  He told us that he was from L.A and immediately we asked what in the world was he doing here.  I am thinking that Muncie has got to be extremely boring compared to LA and I am sure that the weather is a bit nicer there as well.  Well, he proceeds to tell us that his friend is a fugitive and that they are on the run from the law and are just passing through.  Obviously, I was speechless.  I have never had anyone tell me that they were just passing through running from the law before.  I replied wow, yeah, that’s interesting.  Immediately he told us that he had to go and left.  My friend and I both just started cracking up laughing in bewilderment.  So needless to say that was an interesting night and I met some interesting people.  But it was fun and it was nice to see a friend that I had not seen in a while.
